(More customer reviews)I first encountered Skunk Off 25 years ago after a particularly aromatic pheasant hunting event wherein my two Labradors and my partner's own dog trapped two skunks in a culvert with predictable results. Fortunately my partner, a lawyer, had his equine vet just a few miles away and the vet graciously opened his dispensary and offered us the product ("No,no, !#$#! it - leave the dogs outside! I'll bring the stuff out to you!). The product worked then and as I've lately affirmed, still does. After my Airedale courageously battled an entire squadron of skunks to a stand-off, I found I had no Skunk Off on hand. After bathing the dog (at 4:00 am on the front deck), in peroxide, baking soda, and vinegar with a liberal dosage of dish detergent added, I had removed most of the prominent vitriol from her pelt. She was marginally fit to re-enter our house, but the residual skunk-funk was definitely lingering on and about her person. After procuring a bottle of Skunk Off and treating her according to the product instructions, all lingering olfactory memories of her skirmish were gone. Skunk odor is caused by the oily chemical mercaptan, and as it clings to protein (ie. dog hair and skin), as well as readily disseminating throughout the air it is a formidable biological "weapon of mass disruption". Skunk Off attacks the mercaptan on a molecular level and quite effectively neutralizes it, leaving your pup smelling somewhat more like Febreze upholstery cleaner - a very acceptable trade-off. It's the product that veterinarians are most likely to keep on hand and refer to by name. It also works safely on places where contact transfer of mercaptan oil has occurred such as carpets, pet beds, and upholstery. I won't be caught without it again, especially when it is so easily and economically available at Amazon.com for substantially less cost than the suggested retail price, which you will gladly pay if you need it in a crisis. Buy it and keep it on hand if you own a dog and live anywhere skunks abide - that is to say just about everywhere below the Arctic Circle except possibly downtown Manhattan, though I may be hasty in making that exclusion.
