ArchiTEC Gripperwood Hardwood Cutting Board Review

ArchiTEC Gripperwood Hardwood Cutting Board
Average Reviews:

I felt I took a chance buying this board with no picture and no reviews to tell me if it was good, or if it was what I wanted. Well, I was pleasantly surprised, it was exactly what I wanted. It has non-slip gripper pads on each corner to keep it up off the counter, and to keep it securely in place. It has a very large cutting area (almost too big for my counter space), even with the grooves around the edges to capture juices. It is very sturdy and made of a nice quality wood. Overall a very nice and inexpensive board.

Breville 800CPXL Die-Cast Stainless-Steel Motorized Citrus Press Review

Breville 800CPXL Die-Cast Stainless-Steel Motorized Citrus Press
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We just received our Breville 800CPXL Citrus Press after the holidays and have used it several times since. Compared to the low-end (and much less expensive) plastic Krupps version we replaced (which kept tripping our GFCI), I rate this product 4.5 stars out of 5. It falls just short of perfection, but is nonetheless the most elegant and functional citrus juicer I've been able to find at this price point.
LIKES:
1) Beautiful die-cast design feels substantial and stays put when pressing citrus. Kudos to the industrial design team for turning a juicer into a work of art. This is by far the best looking electric citrus press on the market.
2) Brushed stainless exterior goes with any decor and looks great on countertop. No reason to store it away.
3) Removable strainer and juice basin are easy to handwash (I recommend using a small brush or toothbrush to help clean out the pulp).
4) Can press an 8-oz glass of orange juice in less than a minute and works with lemons, mandarins, oranges, and grapefruits without changing elements.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
This juicer works well and beats others I've tried. However, there are a few areas that Breville engineers could improve in their next model. None of these recommendations should cause you to avoid purchasing this unit, but I list them here nonetheless since there's always room to improve most products:

1) Doesn't handle large grapefruit as well as I'd like. Still left some juice/pulp in the skin, which I squeezed out by hand. Breville could consider offering a larger snap-on attachment more suitably sized for pressing grapefruit.
2) Sometimes the skin of the orange remains stuck inside the top of the press, requiring manual extraction. Maybe I'm pressing too hard, but this still seems to happen from time to time. On a few occasions, I stalled the motor completely which surprised me. However, stalling the motor didn't cause the GFCI to keep tripping like the Krupps model we replaced.
3) The electrical cord is nicely designed, but a little too short. I'd prefer to see a 6' cord to reach to the nearest outlet while allowing flexibility in where to place the juicer on the countertop.
4) If you leave the juicer out on the countertop where there's a cabinet above, the handle (press) bangs against the top of the cabinet and requires a little finesse to pull it towards the edge of the countertop when you're ready to use it. The typical height between the countertop and bottom of a cabinet is 18" +/- 1" and often the face frame of the cabinet protrudes about 1/2" or so below the bottom of the cabinet underside. If Breville offered a locking position with the handle down, this wouldn't be a problem and it would be easier to slide out the juicer into position from the back of the counter.
5) The handle itself seems a little flimsy when compared to the rest of the die-cast machine. While it's functional and certainly strong enough, I would prefer a solid convex die-cast handle arm (oval cross section) versus the inverted "U" type cross section of the current design. Although the current arm does appear to be die cast, during the extraction process, juice and pulp tend to splatter on the concave underside of the handle. This makes cleaning the handle a little harder than it should if the handle cross section were convex on top and bottom.
Overall, this is an excellent product with bold design and good looks. I recommend this model to anyone who wants to add freshly squeezed citrus to your daily or weekly regimen. I can't comment on the long-term reliability of the motor since we've only had the unit for a few weeks. But so far so good.

Housed in professional-grade brushed stainless steel with an industrial strength, whisper-quiet motor, this powerful citrus press delivers fresh-squeezed juice quickly and easily. Simply press down on the soft-grip handle to activate the unit. Its revolutionary active-arm system features built-in sensors to monitor the arm position and safely activate the spinning cone as it comes in contact with the fruit. The unit's spherical fruit dome centers the fruit perfectly on the spinning cone, while two stainless-steel filters allow for variable pulp control depending on individual preferences.
In addition, its die-cast stainless-steel juicing cone provides four strategically positioned multi-tiered fins. This unique Quadra-Fin technology effortlessly and efficiently juices any citrus fruit, from the smallest lime to the largest grapefruit, without the need to change cones. For added convenience, the unit's stainless-steel drip-stop juice spout can be flipped upward after juicing to stop the flow of juice and prevent any unwanted dripping or mess. The citrus press also includes a safety switching system, dust cover, cord storage, and easily removable dishwasher-safe parts for quick cleanup. The citrus press measures 7 by 16-1/2 inches and carries a one-year warranty.

iSi Twist and Sparkle Beverage Carbonating System Review

iSi Twist and Sparkle Beverage Carbonating System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Purchased the Twist & Sparkle for my wife for Mother's Day - so far, very good. We have carbonated a few juices for the kids, but it is primarily used to produce sparkling water. One charger produces one quart of water, so I spent some time looking for the best price for soda chargers. My search ended with a 300 pack of Kayser soda chargers for one hundred and 15 buck, which included shipping. So, less than $.40/charger. To date, I've used 10 of the Kayser's and can not discern any difference with the ISI brand chargers.
The colder the beverage, the higher the level of carbonation. I bought the extra pair of bottles so we keep two in the fridge, one charged and one ready to be charged. I would highly recommend the ISI Twist & Sparkle!

i must say, i read all the reviews i could find over and over before i bought this!! i was having a big "hollywood oscar dress-up style" 18th birthday party for my daughter and 40 other of the greatest teenagers in the country and i had this picture in my mind of elegance--except it was "elegance-on-a-budget"!! i was having trouble finding a punch recipe that was non-alcoholic but not baby shower taste either...so, i kept wondering if it would really be worth it and would it just look like cheap plastic?? i finally decided to "just do it" and ordered at the best rate i could find with amazon. it was here pretty quickly and i ripped into it. i was very excited--all parts seemed to fit properly together and i tested it with water and it worked and looked great! it's not a $500 or $1000 silver or crystal punch bowl but it had a good weight to it and looked just fine next to real crystal platters! and with the following recipe from a friend it was a huge hit with ALL the kids--they just kept coming back and never even touched the sodas i kept offering--until the punch ran out! thanks for a fun party addition!! 4cups cranberry cocktail juice + 4cups pineapple juice + 1cup white sugar + 1 tsp almond extract (mix all that together ahead of time) + 1 liter(4cups) ginger ale soda. multiply the recipe however many times you want but add the ginger ale slow slow slow slow slow!!!! i goofed and went too fast the 1st batch and the fountain wouldn't work till the fizz all settled down-but it recovered in spite of me:)!

Hurom HU-100 Slow Juicer, Snow White Review

Hurom HU-100 Slow Juicer, Snow White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the last four years I've used a centrifugal juicer and always wanted a masticating juicer, but never bought one because I knew some of them had problems juicing fruits, and also that they're very slow.
So, when I saw the advertisement for this "slow" juicer that was fast and which could juice both leafy greens and fruits equally well, I was very excited. I raptly watched the video demonstrations of its capabilities and ordered it promptly. Some of its purported advantages of extremely dry pulp, more juice, little to no foam, etc. have fallen far short of the promises made. I notice no increased amount of juice, the foam is absolutely no less than it was with a centrifugal juicer, and UNLIKE my trusty centrifigual juicer the Hurom does a LOUSY job of juicing greens. Just try to juice a leaf of Kale and you'll find it gets all wound up around the screw that is supposed to be chewing it up. It's a mess! I have to stop, put it in reverse, which makes the top come off, then unplug it, stick my hands down around the screw and try to get some of the stuck kale out. And, if you are going to juice a green like kale, do it last or anything you try to juice afterwards will also get stuck around the screw with the kale and not get juiced.
I have also NOT noticed any less separation than the juice created with my centrifugal juicer. So, that's a bust, too.
On the positive side, here are some things I do like about it better than my centrifugal -- it's blessedly quiet, the juice doesn't spit out at high velocity causing splashing everywhere, also small berries and things like pomengranate seeds are easier to juice since they're not trying to jump back out the top of the juicer like they do with the high-speed velocity of the centrifugal juicer.
So, if this is your first juicer, you'll probably be pretty happy with it. If you're a seasoned juicer and are looking to buy up, however, for the money I think I'd wished I'd gone for the twin auger juicer instead.
Update: I've been using the juicer for a couple of months now and am pretty happy with it. I just make sure I tear some of the larger greens up a bit before feeding them in, and I try to juice them last or right before some other item that will help push them through, like celery.

I read prior reviews that the item was damaged upon arrival. I thought that the seller would have changed their ways when I placed the order. Unfortunately, no, my dispenser was unrecognizably destroyed when it arrived on my doorstep. I decided to order the unbreakable dispenser in order to guarantee that I would have a dispenser for a party in two days. It's a shame because it looks beautiful from the photo.

Champion Juicer White 1/Unit Review

Champion Juicer White 1/Unit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using my Champion juicer for about four years now. I also have an Acme 5001 juicer. The Acme is excellent, but I've found myself using the Champion and storing the Acme.
The Champion juicer is extremely easy to set up and use.
The continuous feed feature allows making large amounts of juice without intermittent cleaning. The Champion is versatile. With the screen removed, it's a mincer. With the blank instead of the screen it makes sorbets. With the large hole screen, the juice is pulpier, my preference. You can buy a mill attachement to mill small amounts of flour, nuts, or flax seed.
Juicing is messy. The Champion is OK in that regard but not great. It's not as messy as some, more messy than others. Cleanup is quick and easy. Disassembly is a breeze. Unlike other machines with many parts and hard-to-clean screened centrifical baskets, the Champion has a small semi flat filter screen that is easy to clean.
The plastic parts are tough nylon but stain easily from food. The stains go away in the dishwasher. The parts aren't supposed to be dishwasher safe, but we've never had problems.
The residue is usually reasonably dry. If not, it can be run through again to squeeze more juice out of it. The residue can be used as mulch or to thicken and flavor soups and stews.
The home model motor has almost never stalled on me, though it has slowed with carrots or cabbage if I use too much pressure. Just a slightly reduced pressure on the tamper and the motor speeds right back up.
I know somebody who has had the same Champion since the 1950's and still uses it. Parts are reasonably priced and easily available.
It doesn't juice grass, but you can roll the leaves of cabbage or lettuce and juice them. It doesn't juice leaves as good as some other juicers, but it's OK for occasional use or if the leaves are to add flavor to other juices. A person who only eats raw food would probably benefit from a slow speed gear or screw press type unit instead, even at twice the price.
The unit is heavy and bulky, but has had the same honored spot on our kitchen sink since we bought it new. I love the 1950's utilitarian styling. I'd recommend getting another juicer if it needed to be stored in a cabinet after each use or if you want something sleek looking.
If it was stolen, I'd buy another, except maybe a dark color that doesn't stain.
Update November 2009. It's still going strong, and I've discovered other uses for it. We bought the grain mill, and use it to grind flax seed. An apple butter recipe I made calls for quartering the apples, boiling them for 20 minutes, and then straining the apples to remove the skin and seeds. Straining by hand was extremely slow and labor intensive, but I got a brain storm (necessity being the mother of invention) and put the sieve plate with large hole in my Champion. Running all 20 or so lbs. of cooked apples through it took about 5 easy minutes. The applesauce came out of the bottom, the skin and seeds out the end. If anything, I love my old Champion even more than before.

Samson Ultra Electric Twin Gear Wheatgrass Juicer - Perfect Juice Machine for Juicing Fruits, Vegetables, Wheat Grass, Barley Grass & More. Review

Samson Ultra Electric Twin Gear Wheatgrass Juicer - Perfect Juice Machine for Juicing Fruits, Vegetables, Wheat Grass, Barley Grass and More.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received my juicer as ordered. It came with a demonstration Dvd which I believe was very helpful in understanding the machine and the multiple things it can do. I proceeded to juicing some fruits and vegetables. It is much easier than my single gear juicer that I had. I no longer have to cut everything into bite size pieces before juicing. the parts take more time to clean compared to my old juicer. I tried without success to remove the carrot stain from the white machine and the parts. I regret that they did not offer a variety of colors to choose from until I received the brochure that showed the juicer in multiple colors. I would have gotten the red instead of the white. But if you do not mind carrot stain on your unit, then its fine. I had to apply some pressure to the plunger to get the carrots down. I finally fiqured a way to aim the carrot precisely between the two gears to allow the gears to pull the carrots and other items down. The quality of the juice is noticable different from my old juicer. There was minimal to no froth on the top of the juice. I have been through several juicers personally from J'man jr. to single gear masticators to champions and finally to this. The price was much lower than I saw advertised elsewhere but it's still expensive. I'm not bursting with joy yet but I'll see.

Krups FSC112 Juice Extractor, Black Review

Krups FSC112 Juice Extractor, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This extractor is extremely good at making juice. It's fast and generally produces a good amount of juice relative to the mass of fruit or vegetable going in. Unlike traditional juicers that operate by squeezing the juice out there will be absolutely no pulp in the output, just pure unadulterated juice. This is generally good, although an option for pulpy orange juice would be nice (besides having to scrape the filtered solids - which contain pith and seeds - out of the pulp collector and into the juice). It's really great at some fruits and veggies that traditional juicers can't handle, like carrots, wheat grass, and pomegranate.
If you have a dishwasher I recommend this juicer, assuming you aren't too attached to pulpy juice. If not, only get one if you don't mind spending a lot of time scrubbing. The pulp tends to coat most of the internal workings and is very pasty. It can take a solid 10 minutes to completely wash by hand, which is probably less time than it would take to just get the juice out via an old fashioned hand juicer.
A final feather in its cap, it is quite stylishly designed and looks good.
Edit, a year later: It's much, much easier to clean with a nylon brush than a sponge. As long as you wash it immediately after use (before the pulp has dried into a paste) it's not that bad.

Norpro Jelly Strainer Stand with Bag Review

Norpro Jelly Strainer Stand with Bag
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to say that I was so excited when I bought this strainer. It looked so simple, and so functional, and best of all, so affordable! Then I attempted using it...
The bag falls off the frame if you fill the bag more than about a third full, no matter how tightly you tie the strings. The reason for this is that it can't slip under the metal loop completely to grasp better because the legs of the thing come directly out of the hoop, and for intensive purposes, from the edge. There is nothing for the bag to grasp. I do larger batches of jellies, and having to slow down production this much is unacceptable.
The upshot is that the bags work. If you've already bought this, and have access to some gallon-sized glass jars (ours were originally pickle jars), you can use those and put the bag in them. It works PERFECTLY. Almost as if that was the original idea...

Been using this for a week and it's a good dispenser at a good price with a few minor constructive comments:
1) The top is hard to pop back on once you take it off because you have to fit it on very precisely. You''ll know what I mean when you try it.
2) If you don't position the rubber o-rings correctly at the spout, it will leak.

Duralex Picardie Clear Tumbler, Set of 6 Review

Duralex Picardie Clear Tumbler, Set of 6
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought a set in 2001 & immediately became a huge fan. They are elegant, classic, practical and almost unbreakable! I've dropped them on tiled floors on more than one occasion and they haven't broken. They are Tempered and 2.5 times stronger than regular glasses!
Then I moved and during the move the box went missing so I went immediately and got another set. Over the years I lost exactly 3 of them and when I went to replenish these I was told they've stopped manufacturing them! I couldn't believe it! I would have people come over and as soon as they'd see my glasses they'd talk about how they've been looking for these everywhere. I even had friends trying to buy them from me. They are literally THE icons in glassware.
You can get them in the following sizes:
3.75 oz - 2.6" Height x 2.5" Diameter at the top
4.25 oz - 2.8" Height x 2.9" Diameter at the top
5.75 oz - 3.0" Height x 2.8" Diameter at the top
7.75 oz - 3.2" Height x 3.2" Diameter at the top
8.75 oz - 3.5" Height x 3.4" Diameter at the top
10.5 oz - 3.6" Height x 3.5" Diameter at the top
12 oz - 4.7" Height x 3.5" Diameter at the top
16.75 oz-2.6" Height x 2.5" Diameter at the top
I use the small 5.75 oz glass for having Persian tea (since the color is important and has to be served in a clear glass), I use the 8.75 oz glass for serving whiskey as well as wine in the "French Cafe" style, and the large 12 oz one for water, juice, shakes etc. It also is a perfect fit for standard cocktail shakers. Now that they're back I'm going to buy a couple sets and hoard them, as well as buying a few sets to give to friends. 5 stars is just not enough for these.
