L'Equip 306150 600-Watt Mini Pulp-Ejection Juicer, Gray Review

L'Equip 306150 600-Watt Mini Pulp-Ejection Juicer, Gray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent months researching juicers and surfing veggie themed threads. That research paid off because after owning this juicer for a year, we're still as thrilled as the first day it arrived. I bought it from cooking.com because Amazon wasn't selling it at the time. The price seems to be about the same still.
My wife and I juice everyday and the juicer is sooo easy to clean. Just put a plastic bag in the pulp receptacle and you're good to go. One less item to wash. We use a toothbrush on the blade basket and a regular sponge on the bowl. The blade/basket and bowl are stainless steel. Those infomercial juicers use cheap plastic wherever possible. Trust me, you're only paying for advertising with those TV juicers. This is the real deal. It's quieter than our blender and one large apple, 3 carrots and two oranges yields us two massive glasses of juice. It also has a small foot print. I bought one for my mother and my wife is getting one for her sister.
If you have a large family you might want to skip the mini and go for the regular sized L'Equip but many online reviews say that the mini is actually better for some reason. All I can say is that it is more than enough for a family of four. After a year, the blades are still sharp although not as sharp as new but still going strong. If you're looking for THE BEST JUICER for less than 100 bucks this is it!!

I have two sets of the tall 16-oz Juicy glasses and two sets of the short ones as well, all in the assorted colors. I've been using them for about 3 months now and I love them. They're nice and heavy, and they're cheerful. They were a little expensive but I don't regret buying them.

I am so disappointed as one by one they develop a crack near the mold mark on the bottom and subsequently leak. This happens with all sizes. They have only been used for cold drinks, never warm either so it is not a question of mis-use, just poor manufacturing.

John Boos Reversible Countertop Board Review

John Boos Reversible Countertop Board
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I live in an apartment with a small kitchen, and the counters are too high for me to comfortably knead bread. I have a 2' x 2' table that is a better height for me, and I bought this to put on the table. It's perfect. The craftsmanship is superb, and I love that it's reversible, so I can do basic cutting and chopping vegetables on the grooved side, and flip it over for bread-making. I looked in stores and couldn't find anything that was just right--much less something made in America with sustainably-grown maple! This is as environmentally sound a product as it is lovely.

Add a handsome yet highly functional tool to your kitchen arsenal with this wooden cutting board from John Boos. Made of solid hard rock maple with edge-grain construction for durability, the reversible cutting board provides two smooth work surfaces, one side with a gravy groove along the perimeter to catch drips and excess liquids. Thoughtfully designed, the board also provides an extended lip on either end, which helps keep the board flush with the countertop and securely in place. The finely crafted board measures 17-3/4 by 17-1/4 by 1-1/4 inches, making it a smart choice for a variety of food-prep tasks, whether chopping meat, slicing and dicing fruits and vegetables, or mincing fresh herbs.

Keep the cutting board clean by simply washing it with hot soapy water after each use and dry it with a clean paper towel or let it air dry. The board was shipped from the factory with a penetrating natural oil finish, which allows for great cutting, chopping, and slicing, but it's important to give the cutting board a good oiling on all surfaces every three to four weeks. When the cutting board becomes dry and lighter in color, it's time to re-oil, which is an easy way to lengthen the life of the board by many years.

More appealing and attractive than plastic, a wooden cutting board is a great alternative to plastic cutting boards as it can inhibit bacteria growth, while plastic boards harbor bacteria in the grooves cut into their surface. (Although Boos cutting boards do not harbor bacteria, it is a good habit to use separate cutting boards for different types of food prep.) Wood cutting boards are also easier on knives, where plastic boards can dull knives quickly. Boos cutting boards are manufactured by John Boos & Co. in Effingham, Illinois, which has been manufacturing high-quality wood cutting boards, butcher blocks, and countertops since 1887.
From the Manufacturer
Every professional or at-home chef knows the importance of a good cutting board. John Boos has developed a full line of professional-quality FDA-approved cutting boards in a variety of styles to accommodate individual needs and preferences. Choose from end-grain or edge-grain construction and from over 39 shapes and sizes.

I agree these are a great value and look good too. The inner side of the rim is a little more square than the outer, which is about what you can expect at this price and it is fine for me.
The problem I have is that we have already broken 2 or 3 glasses just separating them after they had been stacked (only 2 high). They are too fragile that way and shouldn't be marketed as stackable if they are not really stackable.

With their attractive beveled design, this set of 30 glasses contributes both practicality and style to any drinkware collection. The glasses feature thick, restaurant-quality glass construction that imparts substance and stability for durable use from one meal or occasion to the next. Distinguished by a crystal-clear finish that beautifully showcases their contents, the glasses make a handsome accompaniment to freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, soft drinks, iced tea, and other beverages. Plus, their stackable design saves space in cupboards, pantries, and hutches. Zak Designs 2-Quart Square Polycarbonate Pitcher with Lid Review

Zak Designs 2-Quart Square Polycarbonate Pitcher with Lid
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can't believe how difficult it is to find a reasonably attractive water pitcher for the fridge. This is my third. One's ugly and too small. The next is tippy and too tall. I'm finally happy, really really happy. The design is very nice. The squared clear polycarbonate gives a clean and modern appearance. I hope it stays clear after some use but I can't comment on that yet.
After my initial enthusiasm with the design I tried to use it to fill a glass with water. I was disappointed to see that pouring amounted to a slow dribble. I timed 23 seconds to fill a 16oz measuring cup. I realized that the lid needs an air hole so I drilled a small hole in the injection point in the center of the lid. The hole is barely visible and completely solves the pouring problem.
To me a bigger problem is that the label on the bottom is attached with a horrible gummy yuck that I have yet to completely remove. I think it's the same stuff the police use for the stickers they put on illegally parked cars. I first soaked the label for 15 minutes. When that failed I went at it with rubbing alcohol. The rubbing alcohol worked fairly well but the gummy glue is still not completely off.
Ok, it's ludicrous to order a water pitcher planning to drill a hole in the top. If it doesn't put you off then I give this pitcher a strong recommendation. My rating of 5 stars is post modification with the assumption that the label will eventually come completely off. Pre modification it would get only 2 stars.

Helen's Asian Kitchen Porcelain Ginger Grater Review

Helen's Asian Kitchen Porcelain Ginger Grater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used a simple bamboo ginger grater for years, but the teeth started breaking off regularly. When trying to find a replacement, I couldn't find the bamboo type anywhere. I searched on Amazon and came across this grater.
In concept, you simply grate the ginger over the teeth and use the brush to collect the gratings. Any juices are captured in the well too. This seems simple enough in concept, so I decided to give it a try.
I put this grater to the test the evening it arrived in the mail. I prepared my ginger and began grating. The teeth do a great job on the ginger, and the juice collected in the well. Then I use the brush to collect the ginger gratings. It seems the bamboo brush is this products main weakness, as it doesn't work. When the ginger stuck to my old grater, I would give it a few taps on the cutting board and be done with it. This grater being porcelain, I tried doing the same lightly but feared it will break. I collected what ginger I could, and washed out the rest.
This product does an excellent job of grating ginger, and is easy to clean up. However the included bamboo brush is useless. Without being able to reasonably collect the grated ginger, this product doesn't make the cut. I have since replaced it with a ginger grater from Williams Sonoma.
PROS:
Grates ginger with ease
Includes a well to capture juices
Easy to clean
CONS:
Ginger gets stuck in the teeth

Ginger is a fibrous root and Helen's Asian Kitchen's ginger grater, with its porcelain teeth, is especially designed to extract the delicious spicy pulp from fresh ginger without the tough, stringy fibers. Simply peel the ginger root and rub the ginger in a circular motion over the rows of teeth. The handy sauce well collects the ginger pulp and juice for easy removal. A specially-designed bamboo brush is included to help dislodge and clean any particles from the grater's teeth. The ginger grater allows you to quickly and easily grate ginger for stir fry, marinades, dipping sauces, salad dressings, desserts and more.

Juicer Attachment compatible with Original Magic Bullet Review

Juicer Attachment compatible with Original Magic Bullet
Average Reviews:

If I could I'd give it minus 10 stars. Magic Bullet is a terrific small appliance, I love it to death but it is NOT a juicer by any stretch of imagination. Maybe you'll manage to fix a quater of a cup of melon or papaya juice but don't even dream of it handling carrots or even cucumbers. The cylinder mesh insert will jump off the seats in one nanosecond, there is no filter or cutting mesh of any kind between the pusher and the blades when you try to push your veggies down; you, your counter and kitchen walls be in pulp up to here (red beats make splatter decor especially bright and colorful:-) , all veggies/fruit/salad leaves completely wasted.

I have only had the Champion household juicer for about a month now but am using it daily and really like it! We have tried many different fruits and veggie drinks with much success. I usually make juice for the four of us every morning, and my kids love waking up to fresh tasty juices. We also have made sorbets for dessert--yum! My only negative experience so far is that while trying to make almond meal, the motor really heated up and started to smell. The heat from the motor affected the flavor of the small amount of almond paste I did create. I haven't tried any other nuts for fear of burning out the motor. If you mainly want great tasting fruit and vegetable juice, I would highly recommend it!

It works ok, just make sure you cut the ends off the lime/lemon before you use the slicer. Takes quite a bit of pressure to cut it, the plastic kinda flexes a little but it doesn't feel like its going to break. Its what you expect for 10 bucks. Would rate 3.5/5.

Takeya 64-Ounce Iced Tea Maker with Silicone Handle, Avocado/Olive Review

Takeya 64-Ounce Iced Tea Maker with Silicone Handle, Avocado/Olive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm so glad I found this tea brewer. I had the Bodum Ceylon brewer for about a year and I would imagine that it's one of the main alternatives to the Takeya.
I'll do a quick comparison:
Durability - honestly, i've only had it for about a month but it's obviously made of better quality, or at least, more durable material. i'm not overly concerned about it breaking. the bodum ceylon i had cracked after using it for about a year and with relatively light usage - as in not every day or even every week of the year. time will tell, but i don't think this is gonna break so easily. the quality feels better in the hand. doesn't feel cheap. Infuser/Filtering ability - the holes on the bodum are large and so smallish leaf or the "dust" gets through quite easily into the brewed tea. the filter on the takeya is very fine and so far i've had clear cups of iced tea. i've been making white tea which has a larger leaf though. i'm thinking that it would do okay with japanese teas which tend have a very fine, almost ground up, leaf. i think takeya is a japanese brand so i would imagine they'd make a brewer that would do a reasonable job on their teas.
the infuser on the bodum though extends the length of the pitcher and so you don't need to fill it up. you would need to fill up the takeya to at least where the tea leaves are in the filter in order to make the tea. you may not want that much and you don't have the option of choosing.Looks - the bodum was nice to look at but the material easily took on a cloudy, not so new looking appearance. it looked old after the first usage. i like the takeya - i like green top since that's my fave color. this particular takeya model is tall so you should take measurements in your fridge to make sure it'll fit wherever you plan to put it. the bodum model is slender which is nice. it slides in easily to narrow areas.Ease of use - the takeya filter/infuser twists into the top/lid. that's very cool. it's very easy. the bodum slides into grooves/tracks on the side of the pitcher. you just have to make sure you get into the grooves; they are easily missed. you also flip this thing at the handle to open the top. the air can also easily access the tea because it's not really closed off. the takeya has a twist open top that will allow you to pour, without excess spillage. and tea stays fresher.BPA - if you care, takeya says it is bpa free. i don't know about bodum. it's not on the description.so, obviously i prefer this one. it's a nice product. i'm looking forward to making more iced tea. i use the cold (no heat) brewing method by the way.

Able to hold up to 66 ounces (8 cups), the Takeya Iced Tea Maker is great for brewing hot or cold tea, or for sun brewing. The attractive pitcher features a fresh design with a clear AcraGlass body and avocado-colored twist-top lid, so it's also great for bringing to the table and serving. The lightweight AcraGlass is BPA-free, as well as stain and odor proof, and it is more durable than glass. The removable rotating lid-infuser fully extracts the tea flavors while steeping, and makes clean-up easy. A soft-grip silicone handle allows for easy pouring or transporting. Dishwasher safe, the unit comes with its own reader-friendly user guide.

Tovolo Star Ice Pop Mold Review

Tovolo Star Ice Pop Mold
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These popsicle molds are very cute and make cool star-shaped popsicles. I've had no trouble getting the popsicles out of the molds. The box recommends squeezing the tube slightly or running it under warm water, both of which really help. However, the aptly named drip tray is too shallow. Melted liquid accumulates and pours out of it after a while. You're substituting several small drips for one big one. Not a huge issue, but annoying. The only other thing is that it does take up a lot of room in the freezer (see the dimensions). Overall, I'm happy with them. The stand makes them easy to fill and they could be taken out of it when frozen for better storage ease. Maybe the drippy issue won't be a problem once this summer heat wave is over. Plus, it's great to make my own popsicles and leave out all the funky additives and coloring that are in commercial brands.

Nesco American Harvest JB-50 2-in-1 Juicer/Blender, White with Green Trim Review

Nesco American Harvest JB-50 2-in-1 Juicer/Blender, White with Green Trim
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bottom line: If you're serious about juicing, give this a pass. But, for light-duty use it has some merit provided that you can live with a couple of design shortcomings.
As you can probably surmise from the price point, this is not a "throw anything in it and have it come out juice" type of appliance. It works best on the softer, juicier fruits/veggies. Yes, it will turn hard items like carrots into juice, but there's a lot wasted - the pulp that comes out is very wet, whereas in a higher-end juicer with more power, the pulp is much drier. Wetter pulp means less juice in the cup and more waste.
I ran apples, carrots, and pineapple through it. The capacity is small, and the feeder tube is sized so that you have to do a lot of cutting to get the items to fit through. Again, fine for the occasional smoothie, but if you want to juice something every day, then the capacity constraints will be a burden.
Unlike other juicers, however, it comes with a blender attachment. That works pretty well - crushed through ice with no problem, and turned out a very nice strawberry daiquiri. A blender-plus-juicer is a natural combo, since some items (such as strawberries and bananas) are best liquified in a blender, while others (apples, pears, etc.) need a juicer.
Simple controls - just two speeds plus a pulse feature. However, the knob is hard to use when pulsing - not comfortable to grip.
The base has suction cups so it stays pretty well put, which is a nice feature. What is not well-designed is the latching system. It uses two plastic (and cheap plastic at that) latches that hold the juicer or blender attachment to the power base. Given the importance of these latches in how the machine functions, I was disappointed to see how light-weight they were. Also, when unlatched, they splay out at a 90 degree angle. I can easily see them getting damaged when the are unlatched. A better design would be sturdier plastic (or better yet, metal) where the latch has a spring so that it remains out of the way when unlatched to prevent damage.
Clean-up was not nearly as easy as it should be. Hard to get into all the nooks and crannies. The plastic stained easily from just a single run of carrots. Worst was the fact that the blender base does not detach, making it a real pain to clean out near the cutting blades.
I'll give it 2.5 stars (rounded down to 2). While it offers dual functionality at a low price, you can get a better blender for less, and the juicer is too lightweight for any significant use. Clean-up is not as easy as it should be, and the build quality is suspect. Perhaps worth a look if you mainly need to blend but want to try out juicing before spending the cash on a better model.
