Tiring of buying pre-packaged hard apple cider and too often not able to find the brands I like, I decided to give the Mr. Beer Cider Making system a try.
First off, it was missing a rubber washer for the valve. Otherwise though, the cider 'wort' preparation was straightforward and the process from beginning to end went without a hitch. Two weeks later, I bottled the brew. Two weeks after that, I tried my first sample.
Plus side: It was nicely fizzy and had some bite. Downside? It was wan and lacking in flavor or character. It tasted almost watered down.
In the meantime, some web searching revealed there are lots of other ways to do simple home brewing -- including just getting some lager yeast, inexpensive 'air-locks' and rubber stoppers from a local brew shop, and adding some sugar (optional) to two $8 gallon jugs of organic unfiltered apple juice from the local Whole Foods. A few weeks later, I used the recycled Mr. Beer empties to bottle the new stuff -- and it was way, way better.
In short, my assessment is the Mr. Beer kit isn't a bad way to get started, and definitely a decent holiday or birthday gift... but there are better ways to go if you want good tasting hard apple cider.
